Inauguration of the exhibition “Petrykivka Painting – the colours of a tradition” in UNESCO Headquarters

The inauguration of the exhibition “Petrykivka painting – the colours of a tradition” was held on the 10th of June 2013 in UNESCO headquarters (Paris) within the framework of the 10th anniversary of the Convention on the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage. It was co-organized by Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, National Commission of Ukraine to UNESCO, Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to UNESCO and with the assistance of the UNESCO Secretariat.

Deputy Director General of UNESCO Mr.Getachew Engida, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration Mr.Dmytro Kolesnikov, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council Yevhen Udod and the Permanent Delegate of Ukraine to UNESCO, Ambassador of Ukraine to France Oleksandr Kupchyshyn addressed participants and guests with welcome speeches.

The inauguration was also attended by the Assistant Director General of UNESCO Mr.Francesco Bandarin, President of the UNESCO General Conference Ms. Katalin Bogay, numerous permanent delegates of UNESCO Member States and diplomatic corps, accredited in Paris.

UNESCO high officials received a special gift from Ukraine – a Petrykivka-ornament decorated chest.

The opening ceremony was also attended by the President of the UNESCO General Conference Ms.Katalin Bogay, Assistant Director General of UNESCO Mr.Francesco Bandarin as well as permanent delegates of UNESCO member states, as well as representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in Paris.

The exhibit displayed works of four generations of masters of Petrykivka painting from the collection of Dnipropetrovsk museum of fine arts. This presentation is one of the most complete collections of unique Ukrainian artworks demonstrated outside the country.

Separate programme engaged a fashion defilé of clothing collection « The colours of Petrykivka », presented by students of Dnipropetrovsk college of technology and design, as well as trio of bandurists featuring best pieces of Ukrainian musical heritage.

The exhibition itself and interactive master classes, offered by the renowned artists of Petrykivka painting were visited by numerous guests, including diplomats, UNESCO Secretariat and their family members, as well as students of the Ukrainian school of fine arts in Paris, who got acquainted with the technique of this decorative ornament.
