Throughout her life, Lesia Ukrainka professed the values of peace, tolerance, inclusiveness, gender and ethnic equality. It is these values that are a priority for UNESCO today. The literary heritage of the writer remains relevant than ever and deeply affects the Ukrainian and international cultural discourse.

The decision to celebrate the 150th anniversary of birth of Lesia Ukrainka in association with UNESCO was adopted at the 40th session of the General Conference in November 2019 with the participation of 193 Member States of the Organization. A special support was provided by Georgia and Germany.

On the occasion of this significant event, an article devoted to the life and works of Lesia Ukrainka is published on the UNESCO website. The publication, which presents to the international community the figure of Lesia Ukrainka, will contribute to draw attention to her works and mutual enrichment of cultures.
