International Mother Language Day celebration 2020

On February 21, the diplomats of the Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to UNESCO joined the celebration of the International Mother Language Day, which was organized at UNESCO Headquarters under the theme "Languages without borders".

Ms Stefania Giannini, the Assistant Director-General for Education, took part in the event, welcoming the opening ceremony and the debate on "Regional perspectives on addressing cross-border language differences". In her speech, Ms Stefania Giannini noted that the International Mother Language Day celebration promotes the right to multilingual education based on the mother language and stressed that UNESCO's activities in the field of the languages and sustainable development were based on a human rights approach and governed by the SDG 4 ensuring equal access to quality education. In addition, the opening of the exhibition and a round table on Kiswahili language:"Opportunities and Challenges of Recognizing Kiswahili as a Continental Language and for the Integration of Africa" were organized within the framework of the celebration with the participation of the Mr Firmin Edouard Matoko, Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations and the Permanent Delegates of the State Members to UNESCO.
