From 2 to 6 December, UNESCO Headquarters hosted a series of meetings of the Parties to the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of the Armed Conflict of 1954 and its Second Protocol of 1999.
The Ukrainian delegation, headed by S. Fomenko, the First Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, took an active part in the meetings that were exteremely important for Ukraine in the context of the preparation for the ratification of the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention. This document will serve as a legal basis for the protection of cultural heritage in the temporarily occupied Crimea and will enable to bring the aggressor country to justice.
During the speech S.Fomenko informed the representatives of the Member States and the UNESCO Secretariat about Ukraine’s determination to ratify the 1999 Second Protocol and highlighted that the actions of the occupying power in the temporarily occupied Crimea had caused great destruction to the Bagçesaray Palace of the Crimean Khans, encouraged the illicit excavations and export of the cultural property to the territory of Russia.
