Today marks 72 years of Ukraine’s membership in UNESCO, during which our country has significantly strengthened its influence within the Organisation.
Ukraine plays an active role in UNESCO governing bodies and programmes. It is currently represented in 12 different structures, including the UNESCO Executive Board (2025–2029), the World Heritage Committee (2023–2027), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Executive Council (2025–2027), IFAP and IPDC councils, and other key committees. Ukraine also co-chairs international processes, including work on the UN Decade of Indigenous Languages.
Over the years, Ukraine has ratified 18 UNESCO conventions. Eight Ukrainian sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List, seven elements of intangible cultural heritage are recognised by UNESCO, eight biosphere reserves are included in the UNESCO network, and six items of documentary heritage are listed in the Memory of the World Register.
UNESCO continues to support Ukraine through assistance programmes, monitoring of the situation in Crimea, funding for cultural and educational recovery, and other initiatives. At the same time, Ukraine actively initiates decisions within UNESCO.
Overall, Ukraine’s 72-year journey in UNESCO shows a clear transformation from membership to leadership, with a stronger voice, greater responsibility, and growing influence.
