On April 10, 2014 the Executive Board of UNESCO adopted by an overwhelming majority a resolution "UNESCO Monitoring situation in Crimea (Ukraine)", introduced by Ukraine. In the text of the resolution deep concern is expressed with the growing presence of Russian military forces on the peninsula that pose serious threats to equal access to education, freedom of expression and preservation of cultural heritage.

During his statement in defense of the draft resolution the Permanent Delegate of Ukraine to UNESCO Oleksandr Kupchyshyn clearly outlined the challenges of humanitarian nature within the scope of Organization’s mandate that Ukraine and the whole international community are facing as a result of Russian aggression in Crimea.

Taking note of the information provided by the Ukrainian delegation, Members of the UNESCO Executive Board invited the Director-General to follow up on the situation in Crimea in the fields of competence of UNESCO and to report back on the latest developments to the Executive Board at its 195th session.
